The Akwa Ibom State University, is in the news again! This time in a terrible condition of over 9 months of none payment of salaries to the newly employed staff of the University.
The University had employed about 200 staff, about 9 months ago into various departments and Units of the Institution to boost its productivity and academic activities.
Sources speaking to JobOffersNaija, said the just concluded Accreditation exercise embarked upon by Nigerian Universities Commission(NUC) was made successful mostly by the committed efforts of the newly employed staff.
The accreditation saw the Faculty of Natural and Applied Science through the accreditation of all the 11 departments of the Faculty slated for the accreditation exercise.
Unfortunately, these staff have been totally neglected by management of the institution and no word on the salaries of these staff. Some staff of the institution who spoke to JobOffersNaija said their lives have been more impoverished now than when they were at home or at their old jobs. Some lament that if they had known, they would have stayed put in their old jobs. Most of the new employees lament about the hugh debt they are owing because of transportation to work and back. Many are unable to go to work because all avenues to raise funds have been exhausted.
Some had gotten bank loans, to get accommodation close to the school, with the hope to paying back on time. Now those loans are running with interest, thus further throwing many into untold hardship.
On investigation into this crisis, JobOffersNaija, discovered that the Akwa Ibom State Government who is the employer, have totally neglected the several appeals of the Management of this institution concerning the none payment of salaries. Reliable sources from the Accountant General's Office of the State has it that Government is short of funds and cannot accommodate the salary budget of the new staff.
Also, with the elections coming up soon, a Government House Staff told JobOffersNaija that he does not foresee the payment of those salaries until a new Governor has been sworn come May 2015.
Efforts to reach out to some Senior members of the Institution and even to the Accountant General of the State to comment on the situation, proved abortive.
The situation at the Akwa Ibom State University concerning these new staff have been a very pathetic one and unbecoming of a State like Akwa Ibom State who earns one of the highest allocations in Nigeria and one of the top 3 largest Oil Producers in the Country.
How can a State open the doors of employment and did not make provision to accommodate payments of salaries and other benefits to staff? Its totally against Labour Laws of this Country and relevant bodies concerned with such injustice should rise up to find solutions to this ugly inhuman situation.
The Nigerian situation has been that of carelessness and none planning especially in the Public sector.
The Case of the Akwa Ibom State University is just one out of the many cases of neglect and lack of sound governance in Nigeria.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Dr. Godswill Akpabio, is know as an Uncommon Transformer, yet human capital development has suffered the most in this State. The unprecedented waste of financial resources in the so-called "Infrastructural Development" has sucked the State Dry of re-current capital expenditure budgets like salaries.
The Politicians and Government appointees in the State are busy flaunting ill-gotten wealth at the expense of the very people like these poor Staff of Akwa Ibom State Univerisity, who make the system work. A State like Akwa Ibom should never owe any form of Salaries because its a shame to a State that receives 5times the amount of revenue that other state in the same country receives.
Akwa Ibom State University is the Pride of Akwa Ibom State and so the present predicament should not be left to linger to avoid any staff rioting or strike which will ultimately affect the innocent student of the Institution.
