On Monday, 6th of July 2015, Some staff of Akwa Ibom State University who were employed since April 2014 protested about the non payments of their 15 months salaries owed them by the State government. The aggrieved staff lamented that life have become a nightmare for them as the School management and State government have paid deaf ears to their repeated appeal for them to come to their aid.
Staff who spoke with Naija Jobs said they have become beggers and nuisance to their family and friends. They said over 279 of them employed to work at the Ikot Akpaden Campus, Mkpat Enin LGA and the Obio Akpa campus, Oruk Anam LGA and some of them have been given eviction notices because they have no money to pay the rents again. They said even in their plight the management of the school went ahead to query many of them for not coming to work or even coming late to work. They also lamented that their children have been driven out of school because of their cashless situation. The aggrieved. Staff carried placards with different inscriptions on it.
The staff later on the same day carried their placards to Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo to seek the audience of the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who unfortunately was not available to speak to the staff. Nevertheless, he was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Government. House, Pastor Bassey Umoren who assured the staff that government was working to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
In a contradictory statement made by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eno Ibanga, during the maiden 1st Convocation of the Institution in April 2015, he was quoted saying that the University was not owing any staff unpaid salaries. He said that there were no aggrieved staff who complained about unpaid salaries. He went ahead to disclaim newspaper publications which stated that aggrieved staff were about to disrupt the Convocation ceremony. Fortunately the action by the aggrieved staff was averted through the present NASU Chairman, Comrade Idong John.
The aggrieved staff have declared that "NO SALARY NO MATRICULATION
They have concluded plans with Channels Television to air the Matriculation Protest seekng goverment to pay their 15months arrears.
The situation at Akwa Ibom State University has become pathetic and requires urgent State Government intervention before the situation becomes uncontrollable.
